Alberta Winter Provincial Diving Championships

December 2016 – Repsol Centre, Calgary

The Alberta 2016–17 Diving Championships were held December 16th, 17th and 18th at the Repsol Center in Calgary. There was a large turnout of Edmonton area divers who competed in the Alberta Provincial Stream Championships and the Alberta National Stream Championships.

In the Provincial Stream Championships highlights:

  • Girls D (11 & under) 1m — Kaede Anderson from ESP placed 5th with 150.05 points
  • Girls D 3m — Kaede Anderson took home the bronze medal with 167.60 points
  • Boys D 1m — William Gunderson from ESP took second with 139.40 points
  • Boys D 3m — William Gunderson placed fourth with 118.60 points

In the National Stream Provincial Championships highlights:

  • Girls E 1m — Anika Smith from ESP took the bronze with 202.50 points; Elizabeth McGillivray from ESP was fourth with 199.80 points
  • Girls E 3m — Anika Smith took the bronze with 210.90 points; Elizabeth McGillivray was fourth with 207.10 points
  • Boys E 1m — William Gunderson from ESP won gold with 202.50 points
  • Boys E 3m — William Gunderson won gold with 197.60 points
  • Girls A 1m — Tanya Boychuk from ESP was second with 420.30; Angela Unsworth from ESP was fourth with 349.55
  • Girls A 3m — Tanya Boychuk was third with 438.70 points, exceeding the national standard

Carlo Lopez from EKDC won five gold medals across all three boards and the open events, exceeding the national standard on all three. The Edmonton contingent brought home a significant haul of Provincial Championship medals.

The Annual Sleigh Bell Novice Diving Competition

December – Kinsmen Sport Center Diving Pool

The Sleigh Bell Meet was held at the Kinsmen Sport Center Diving Pool. Divers representing the Edmonton area clubs and divers from as far away as Lethbridge came to enjoy the friendly competition. There was a great number of new younger divers showing excellent promise.

Notable ESP results:

  • Girls 8–9 age group 3m — Anika Smith placed second with 129.10 points
  • Girls 8–9 age group 1m — Anika Smith took third with 160.90 points
  • Girls D 10–11 1m — Kaede Anderson from ESP placed fifth with 155.25 points
  • Boys C 12–13 1m — Dominic Pittard from ESP won the event with 180.65 points
  • Boys E 9-under 1m — Reese Whillier from ESP won by 1/10 of a point over teammate Nicolas Belony (151.35 vs 151.25)
  • Boys D 10–11 3m — William Gunderson from ESP placed fourth with 118.60 points

The close competition indicates substantial depth in the talent pool of the Edmonton diving clubs.
